Spring Forward: Candlelight, Cubs, and Creative Comebacks

Hello, readers! You did it! In just a few short weeks, you can officially say you survived another Chicago winter.

Most of the people I chat with know I get through the dark winter months with constant candle burning, vitamin D supplements, hot baths, and a determined promise to get outside—no matter the temperature. I tried my best… but yes, walking in -10 wind chills didn’t exactly happen.

But alas! In just a few days, March will finally be here, bringing with it the hope of spring. It reminds me of growing up in Chicago, when we knew the legendary Dairy Queen on Devon Avenue would reopen for the warmer months and spring break was just around the corner.

These days, I watch the squirrels dig through our mulch while sipping my morning coffee. I drive my kids to karate practice with a little more daylight lingering in the sky. I check my phone for the latest updates on Cubs spring training games.

All of this change gives me renewed energy and a sense of refreshed motivation. I’m excited to showcase my latest short story, Like a Doll, for my adult readers. I wrote this story a while back, and it remains a personal favorite. I was fortunate to have my sister, Lauren Davies, design the cover, which perfectly captures the dark mood of the piece.

Truth be told, publishing an eBook was a bit outside my comfort zone. I’ve always loved “old-school” printed books, but I also realize that a short story can truly thrive in a digital space. I’m hoping to share more in this genre, and I also have another children’s book currently in the works.

With any luck, 2026 will be the year I carve out time to finish a few other works in progress.

Stay tuned!
